Dog Food

What drives us more and more is the goal of creating a version of Chandler which is actually useable on a day-to-day basis. We'll be our own first early adopter, bleeding edge customer at OSAF and it will be the calendar which is the first targeted area of functionality. Call it eating our own dog food or whatever you like, the idea is taking hold.

The calendar will be experimentally useable with basic features in the 0.4 release by the end of October. That means don't trust your data to it, but start to play with it. From there, make it more robust so you can trust your data, add more features, and focus on doing whatever is necessary to make it useable on a sustained basis.

A couple more imperatives: Focus more on basic features across the sweep of the product, deferring anything not critically necessary. Create a plan for a "dog food" version of Chandler for mid-2005.

It's a big sea change for us, but the time is right, and the meme is spreading.

This is great to hear. I've been looking through the OSAF website and wiki for a discussion of how the development team is beginning to use Chandler in their efforts to accomplish Chandler. It strikes me that the sooner this happens, the greater momentum will build and the more you will see Chandler evolve in innovative ways to address needs in the PIM domain. If it isn't already, is there a chance that this topic could be further developed on a regular basis somewhere within the OASF website or Chandler wiki? Thanks!

This is a small entry in Mitch's blog - but it shows that OSAF is on its way back to earth. Good to know.

I'll keep people posted here as to "dog food" status. Expect to see more wiki pages on the same subject.
